The MayDay Scooter Club

Something near and dear to us, on Friday, April 16 friends have organized a scholarship fundraiser at The Globe in Chicago to honor the late Dan Parry. Dan was one of those guys that everyone knew, he touched a lot of people and did a lot for a scene that really needed a kick in the ass. Wish we had a picture from the last night we rode home from In The Spirit – Dan asks JJ to be careful because the records in the box are worth more than the scoot… we still rode like assholes. Who would have guessed life could be so short?

We hope this is a night to make Dan proud – money is being raised to fund a scholarship for aspiring EMTs, Paramedics, and Firefighters in Chicago. Training for any of these trades requires a serious commitment, physically and financially, and the Dan Parry Memorial Scholarship seeks to make it easier for those who want to pursue their dreams of service. We need more of this.

JJ will be spinning, along with Eric from MODchicago and Ben from Windy City Soul Club/Rare $oul Millionaires. Expect to hear plenty of Dan’s favorites as we toast a guy who left too soon and remains dearly missed.  All are welcome, please spread the word. RSVP on facebook.

Last time we were at Subterranean we had such a blast, we’re quite happy that Gary invited JJ to spin here again. This bar was host to a number of great nights, including the Rare $oul Millionaire’s monthly and I’m The Face from MODchicago’s Eric Colin and the late Dan Parry of Northern Guerrillas. Always a pleasure to spin this spot.

Gary has brought Grover in from Cincinnati for this round, so we’re guaranteed to hear some top notch scooter rally sounds… and still on the heels of High Rollers, that’s just what we’re in the mood for. This time, WE bring the talc.

MODchicago heads to Late Bar on Wednesday, March 10 with Ethan of Mannequin Men and JJ from MayDay SC bringing some WCSC vibes with him… sure to be a hot night of rare and original 45s (and maybe some LPs too), with quite a few sounds that haven’t been heard in these parts for some time!

February really is a short month… seems like days ago we were getting sick from talc fumes at Empty Bottle. We’ll, it’s that time again. Saturday, Windy City Soul Club returns to Empty Bottle for more floorpounding northern classics and modern rarities. Brad Hales from Ann Arbor Soul Club and Peoples Records Detroit comes in for a guest set, so don’t miss it!

Day 1 of IMS at the Stevens Convention Center in Rosemont was a blast! The Mods v. Rockers booth looks boss, thanks to the hard work of Ton Up Club Chicago. We’ll be here all weekend long, so come out and stop by. Head over to the gallery and check out the pics as we set up for the big event.

Windy City Soul Club is back for February this FRIDAY, Feb. 5, at the Empty Bottle. WCSC welcomes Dante of Danny’s ever-popular funk night in… we hear he has a killer northern soul collection, so it’ll be great to see what he brings. See you there!

We’re mixing it up with our good friends… err, mortal enemies… the Ton Up Club for a Mods vs. Rockers booth at the Cycle World International Motorcycle Show. Stop by and check us out, we’ll have 6 scoots and god knows how many motorcycles, plus loads of memorabilia from the Chicago scooter scene! Show runs from February 19-21 out in Rosemont at the Stevens Convention Center.

Best way to get there is on the Hobgoblin Beer Bus – meet on Saturday, Feb. 20, 2pm, at Five Star Bar. $10 gets you on the bus with all the beer you can drink… bus returns from the show at 7pm.  Ton Up Chicago follows it up with their anniversary party at Five Star.

Next WCSC night will be the first Friday in February, 2/5/2010, and still at the Empty Bottle. Doors at 10pm (although you can certainly arrive earlier, JJ starts spinning popcorn and rnb sounds around 9:30 to get the vibe going), on $5.
